No New Posts Woodlawn Graveyard

Woodlawn is a large graveyard where many have been buried since the late 1700's and early 1800's when the town was first settled. There is a section of the graveyard that is taken care of by the government where veterans of wars have been buried. Many crows, ravens, bats and even the odd red cardinal have made their home here. There are a lot of trees and bushes growing in the graveyard that a gardener and the diggers seem to take care of. Here and there one may find an open tomb. The graveyard is surrounded by black cast iron gates and as one drives in through the main gate there is a small building where all information on unmarked grave locations can be found.

No New Posts Babbling Brook

A shallow brook starts running at the top of the hill branching off in the direction of the ancient Sequoia tree and the direction of the cemetery. It runs into a pond just before reaching the Sequoia tree and runs underground of the cemetery. The waters run over several large and small smooth stones. Some believe that there's still strains of gold to be found in the Babbling Brook which sounds like something is babbling under water and thus how it got its name.

No New Posts Tanglewood Nature Center

Tanglewood is a Nature Center where one may learn about snakes, foxes. owls and other mammals, reptiles, amphibians and birds one may or may not be able to find in the area. There are jobs open as well as volunteer positions. In the summer they have a two six-week camps back to back as well as kids activities throughout the year. Tanglewood also has a variety of hiking trails with a couple biking ones, and while it is suggested one takes a guide it is not a requirement. It is asked that visitors who bring trash with them leave with it, so one should not litter. Rattlesnakes live in the area so one needs to be careful of those as well. There is one or two trails that horses are allowed on.

No New Posts Sacred Indian Ground

One dare not disturb the sacred ground where ancient burials of the indigenous people once took place. Getting near the place one can practically feel the presence of the long deceased. The trail leading from and to the sacred grounds is a place one may at times be able to find old arrow heads and other artifacts.

No New Posts The Great Sequoia

Hidden within the woodlands is an ancient Sequoia tree. Some believe it is the home of many woodland creatures and possibly faeries that might dwell there. Fireflies seem to love the place and often gather there. The tree is surrounded by a field of wildflowers, berry bushes and ferns. A family of owls has made its home further up the trunk whilst there is a large opening at the base of the trunk for either humans, a bear or a family of wolves to take shelter. With its long roots growing far from it, there are rabbit warrens that live beneath some of its roots if dug deep enough.

No New Posts Cheshire Cave

Upon one of the large hills that surrounds the valley town of Helmira there is a system of caves. It begins with the Cheshire Cave that is shaped oddly and inside there are stones of a purplish or pinkish hues. It was once the home of a lynx or some other wildcat whether it was domestic or wild no one is certain anymore. What they are certain of is that the cave might lead to the entrance of hell. Yet there is no real proof other than an ancient seal that cannot be broken without a certain spell and bloodline. Some believe instead of hells door that it is the entrance to a room full of treasure. The system of caves however has led many astray to the point they got so lost they eventually died of starvation. There is a bit of water trickling within and to eat one might be able to eat mushrooms if they're not of the poisonous variety. Others who got lost and then found their way out have oft had to be sent to a mental institution for they'd lost their minds, or so it was believed that they had lost their minds. Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction after-all.

Board Description
Helmira Woodlands
Surrounding Helmira and any connecting towns and villages are the Appalachian Mountains although it seems more hilly than actually being mountains. There are a lot of coniferous, oak, crab apple, black walnut and maple trees growing in the area both in the woodlands and the yards of the housing section.
